Getting clothes into Back By Popular Demand might be just as challenging as getting into some colleges. Managers say they sort through nearly 1,500 items a day and take 400 to 500. Nearly 30 percent of what’s in store still has tags attached. For example? A black couture St. John evening dress, with its original price tag (over $1,000). Wow is all i can say about our annual $1 sale this past saturday. For those of you that don't know...twice a year at the end of a major season we take all of our past inventory and put it outside for $1 each. That's right ONLY one $1. The best part is that the money goes to charity. How cool is that. This year thanks to all of our super awesome customers we raised $2464!!! Thank you so much to Jessica Daular from Jessica Shops Q100...due to her annoucement on the radio it turned out to be the BEST $1 sale so far.

So where does the money go. Well this year it's going to be a surprise but stay tuned to find out because it for an awesome cause and we are super excited about it.

.....well not really but to us we are LOL. After talking about it for years we finally took the plunge into the big boy advertising world and got a billboard. We had a professional photographer take our photo's and a real designer do our ad. (so grown up..tear) The result is fabulous and we couldn't be prouder. Of course the biggest thanks go's to God and our fabulous consignors and customers because without them...we would have never made it here. It has been so awesome to watch our business grow by leaps and bounds the last couple of years. We were just commenting the other day on how hard it used to be to get 1 designer handbag...and when we did we would showcase it, spot light it..you name it. Now we have so many designer handbags that we actually don't have enough room in our 5 showcases to fit them all. Its that awesome!!! Of course the most important thing to remember is were we came from and were we are going and our goal to always remain the same! We want to provide our customers with the best shopping experience at the best prices possible and we stand by our slogan "from gap to gucci we've got you covered!" So for the first time EVER since I have owned the store we created a whole clearance dept. it has two sections to it and was a HUGE hit this weekend. It has done so well that we are constantly filling it with new items. It was the perfect solution for everyone because if you only want to shop clearance, it is now all in one place for you...and if you just want to shop new arrivals, you no longer have to look through clearance items to get to them. Had your eye on something that we've had awhile...come and see if maybe it's been reduced...to that perfect price.

Wow...today was craziness in all the best ways possible. First let me say that typically we are slow this time of year due to vacations and people getting ready for back to school...well we haven't had a slow moment all summer! The drop offs are just "Rolling" in and they just keep getting better and better. Today we had a mother daughter team drop off tons of Juicy Couture, Free People are Christian Dior items. And half of them still had new tags on them. The shoes were $770 each and we are selling the new ones for only $350 and the every so slightly loved ones for a steal at $275. Come in quickly they will be gone fast!

Great! Then we will get along just fine. If you went to your closet right now, how many items would you find with new tags still on them? Scary isn't it. Sometimes I go shopping in my own closet or an pleasantly surprised when I find "new to me" items in my closet.

Did you know that on average over 30% of our inventory comes to us new with tags still attached and a good 20% of the gently used have only been tried on or used for a few hours. This is why I love consignment..it's like driving a car off the lot and it's immed. worth less...well when you buy clothes at retail price they are dropping in value before you get to the front doors of the store. So next time you need a retail fix and don't want to shop "used" remember we do "new" too.

P.S. People ask us all the time were we buy our new inventory from (ie overstock) and we are delighted to say..we don't...EVER! We have such wonderful consigners that they stock us with the best!

Consignment shopping is better than the mall

So i never shop at the mall because honestly I find so much I don't need just working in a consignment store. Needless to say I went out to the Mall of Ga this weekend for the first time in 2 years and was shocked to say the least. Every store I went into was almost a mirror of each other. Tons of winter sale items (its summer for heavens sake) and very little selection of new arrivals. There were tons of empty shelves and open spaces, not in the airy way but in the gloomy, lonely way. It was a shock to see the state of regular retail. The other thing that I noticed was the lack of staff and customer service. I went into a least 3 stores that no-one said a word to me. It was very educational and I ended up making a list of what I wanted BBPD to stand for and the type of service I want people to receive. I always tell the girls to greet everyone that comes into the door, although honestly sometimes we have to do it twice..LOL our air conditioning is sooooo loud sometimes I can't hear myself think..but at least we're cool. Anyway, we try to say hello to everyone without over-whelming people. I have learned that many people just want to look around and will let you know when they need help..alot of them have told me they feel sufficated if we ask or try to help them further..and then others are chatty-kathy and love it.

So I also had another interesting thought.....we have sooooo much new items coming in that I never thought about lack of inventory. Now instead of worrying about having a place to put all of it...I am just gratful that we are receiving tons of drop offs and that we are backed up!!

So long story short, now more than ever, consignment is the way to go b/c:

1. We add at least 350-500 new pieces A DAY to our inventory, they are all different so no duplicates

2. We are small business so we know alot of our customers by name and really do care to know your stories and quirks

3. You don't have to wait for the sale b/c our items are always priced WAY below retail

So shop happy, shop consignment and relish te fact that you are shopping smart!

So today was so much fun...imagine a air-conditioned bus that drives you to Atlanta's best consignment stores and the only worry you have it..the red purse or the black one?? They feed you a scrumptious lunch, dinner and every store you visit has snacks, snacks, snacks! Everything from champagne to brownies to cookies...what more could you ask for. You get to sit back, relax and TALK..yes ladies you know what i'm talking about...we love to TALK and it's extra nice when you have no traffic, or direction to worry about. Sounds fun doesn't it...we'll were you there? If not don't worry there will be more. The one that we participated in today was out of Alabama and put together by Tracy Dismukes from Collage Consignment Boutique. It was perfect, as always Tracy does a fantasitic job..so if your ever in Alabama stop by in one of her 3 stores.

As many of you know we no longer carry children's items due to the fact that we are choosing to comply with the new regulations and do not want to put your children at risk. Sometimes we feel like the only ones...so it's nice to know that there are other companies out there that believe the same thing we do. If it's the law...we will follow it.

P.S. We and Finders Keepers are the only two stores that we are aware of that are no longer taking kids items. There could be others...I'm just not aware of them.

Personally I hope to resume taking clothing as soon as they change the law or we buy a thermo XRF analyzer. cost $27,000-$45,000 each and we are not sure of the side effects from the rays...we want the kids and our employes to be safe.

Consumer Safety Product Improvement Act of 2008

The TRUTH about the new lead laws.

The Problem: many of you are aware of a new lead law that was passed in August 2008 called the Consumer Safety Improvement Act of 2008. The law states that all products for children 12 & under must pass the new lead law of 600ppm. This includes everything...shoes, clothing, books, equipment, toys and so on. In order to sell, resale or donate an item as of 2/10/09, you must be able to prove that the item has less than 600ppm lead in it.

The Consequences: The new law means that everything that is intended for children 12 and under must be tested for lead or have a manufactures certificate proving that it is legal to sell. For consignment, thrift, ebay and craigslist sellers that is impossible to do unless you hire a testing company, or rent one of the machines to test all your items. That is too costly for 99.9% of the businesses to do.
If we break the law we will face a $100,000 per item fine plus 5 years in jail.

The CSPC reply to our outrage: Yesterday, the CSPC issued a press release to quell the fears of consumers and shipowners outraged by this law. according to the CSPC:
"The new safety law does not require resellers to test children's products in inventory for compliance with the lead limit before they are sold. However, resellers cannot sell children's products that exceed the lead limit and therefore should avoid products that are likely to have lead content, unless hay have testing or other information to indicate the products being sold have less than the new limit. Those resellers that do sell products in violation of the new limits could face civil and/or criminal penalties."

What it all means: The law as written not only concerns me as a business owner of a resale shop, but you as a consumer and anyone wanting to hold yard sales, eBay, craigslist, etc...In essence, what this says is that while we do not have to test for lead and phthalates levels, we cannot sell without testing and if we DO, and are caught we will be in violation and could face civil and/or criminal penalties. Basically, the CSPC is talking out of both sides of their mouths, trying to put a positive spin on the changes to quiet the outrage.

Back By Popular Demand's Stance: While I don't like the extreme measures that this law imposes, I do believe in product safety for all merchandise, especially children's. As a member of the National Association of Resale & Thrift Stores and a resale store owner, I will comply with the law as it is written. As of Feb 10, 2009, if there has not been an amendment to the bill stating that consignment shops are exempt from testing requirements, BBPD will no longer carry children's items. Once an amendment has been made to CSPSIA, we will consider carrying children's items again.

We will continue to take tween sizes of 14-16 in girls (we only want abercrombie, justice, hollister, limited too and similar brands)

We will continue to take Maternity clothing

What has the economy done for our business???? We get this question ever day and the answer is, "Awesome" we are busy, busy, busy!! We are getting on average of 12-15 new accounts a day plus the regular 50-75 normal consignors dropping of daily that means HIGE selection for YOU! A normal day for us means going through a couple thousans pieces brought to us by consignors and then selecting the best for you the customers. On average we take about 35% of what is brought to us! Yes we are picky, but it pays off. It means fast turnover and an every changing store for our customers.

The hardest part of our job is not spending our entire paycheck...as employees we know first hand that if we don't it now we risk it not being there later...and usually if it's something great that we want...you guessed it....it's GONE!

One of the fastest sell we ever had....lady walks in the door with a LV purse (authentic of course) to consign...flash forward 2 minutes when a new customer comes in looking to see if we had gotten in new designer handbags...of course we show her the LV purse and she buys it right then $650...what a steal and everybody is happy....the consigner now has money to put towards a new purse and the customer just bought a designer bag at a fraction of the original cost!

It was awesome and very educational if your not familiar with consignment and thrift shops. They talked about how with the current economy lagging a bit...it's smart to shop consignment. Why pay full price for a style that you can get for a 1/3 of the original price.

At Back By Popular Demand over 30% of ladies clothing that is brought in comes new with tags! How could you pass that up? Don't do USED clothing...no biggie shop from the new items!

Options for resale pointed out on the Today show were consignment, thrift, craigslist and ebay. The biggest benefit of consignment is that we take all the work out of it. No need to list, take a picture and keep up with an online posting or list and have strangers come through your home. Just bring it in clean, on hangers and make sure it's a current style/brand and we tag it, hang it and sell it for you.

What about buying used?

Well you can buy online, in a consignment store or at a yard sale. Ebay had great items the draw back: not knowing if it's authentic, no return, different brands have different sizes and of course not being able to see it one beforehand.

Benefit of consignment: you try it on, it had been pre-washed so it probably won't shrink anymore, you can return it later, and best of all you can try it on it the store...because we all know a size 8 in one brand is different in another brand.
